Firefox 3.6 Locks Out Rogue Add-ons

The new feature, which Mozilla dubbed “component directory lockdown,” will bar access to Firefox’s “components” directory, where most of the browser’s own code is stored. The company has billed the move as a way to boost the stability of its browser.

The State of Open Source on Firefox's Fifth Birthday

Firefox has shown us the path to open source success. The key is time. Sure five years isn’t all that long in the great scheme of things, but the browser’s story actually begins in 1998 when the Mozilla foundation was formed. The organization’s first browser was released in 2002. Using these milestones as a starting point, Firefox is actually a seven—or 11—year-old product. That’s how long it took the browser to hit 330 million. Not bad, all said, but it’s hardly an overnight success story.
Firefox and Chrome updates spike stability bugs

Firefox 3.5.5, which comes only a week after the release of 3.5.4, addressed a start-up crash problem and crashes in the GIF image decoder of the open source browser, among other bugs (as explained here). The flaws create a possible means to crash browser with malformed code on websites but their main importance is as an irritation that impairs users ability to surf the web without irksome browser crashes.
